It had to happen...this team stopped playing for him. He found way to many positives in their losses. He actually thought they played well last night?????? Is the man insane. We were all there, we saw a half assed effort at best. They need a coach who is not afraid to challenge them..let's see what happens.

Graves

Adam Graves was a great Ranger and is a wonderful person. It was a pleasure to see his jersey raised to the rafters. His long walk to the ice spoke volumes...he has touched the lives of so many people both on and off the ice. It is just like him to stop, shake hands and hug every kid in his path. It was a great night for him!

If you have ever had the pleasure of meeting Adam Graves, you know his warmth is unmeasurable. ...and if he hugs you...you will never forget it ;)

I just wish the Rangers did not have a game after the ceremony. They have a way of crapping up everything. They were awful...just awful. Everything is wrong with them. They are a disgrace on both ends. Many changes need to be made, starting with the coach.

As for our section, we had an annoying visitor last night, who sat right next to us. He made everyone insane. Let's hope he does not come back soon.

Are they kidding me??? Can someone please explain to me what is gong on with this team?
We sit there night after night watching the same damn game, but somehow they managed to take it to an even lower level against the Islanders. Many will argue the Islanders play hard against the Rangers because of the rivalry-blah, blah, blah. It is true to some degree, but they are just plain awful this season and they made the Rangers look like fools. I know I complain about the defense all the time, but they are a total disgrace. I would love to see Staal and Girardi develop on this team because I think they are worth the effort. However, without good veteran defenseman to learn from, how do they stand a chance? Let's be honest, trades have got to be made and no NHL team wants to pay Redden or Rozsival their offensive salaries and we will loose promising youth yet again.

Prucha was the only spark of the game. It was nice to see him out there hustling. He sits there night after night wondering when he may get the opportunity to play the game. Are the forwards so unstoppable that Renney does not want to kill the good karma?? Drury and Gomez have done nothing.. nothing at all! Gomez has scored 7 goals in 34 games and Drury 10 in 39 games. Why not Prucha? Right now he is on pace to pass them both with his stellar 2 goals in 12 games. I certainly do not think he is the answer to the problems, but he can't make it much worse.

Some of my many suggestions for this team are to take the C away from Drury. Maybe it is just too much pressure for him. Say goodbye to Renney and do not replace him with one of the assistant coaches. We need a total overhaul. And finally, try to convince our overpaid defenseman that hitting is Good!

Now my small gripe with the Ranger faithful. It is totally embarrassing to hear a "last place" chant while the Islanders are scoring their forth goal. The Islanders should not have been able to score one never mind four. When the Rangers are having a hard time with the last place team, we should just be quiet and humble.

I will stop now because it is New Year's Eve and I need to power nap. Getting old sucks!

I have not been able to log onto the blog in weeks, which is unfortunate because we missed out on some interesting discussion.

Rozsival's penalty shot has been this months most exciting event, which is both sad and true. I have to admit I was impressed with his stick handling abilities. I am sure we will start to see him in the shootout lineup. Now I would like to be dazzled by his defensive abilities soon..please?

The game vs. Washington was a disgrace. You have got to be kidding me with that performance. The entire team fell under the Ovechkin spell. The first period was promising but as usual they could only maintain 20 minutes of play. The only high point of the night was the many holiday beers we shared.....

Anyway, I hope you all had a great holiday and have a very happy new year!

Hello everyone!

We have been slacking off this season, but now it is time to jump back into Ranger discussions.

They have been sitting at the top of the division all season so far, yet they are a defensive nightmare. If it were not for the outstanding goaltending of Lundqvist, this team would be on the bottom of the pack.

The question is how long can he keep playing at this level? He cannot be expected to be the Rangers number one defenseman. (A position Mike Richter knows very well) By next month, he will be totally exhausted and not able to bail them out of yet another shoot out.

I can go on and on, but fortunately for you guys I have to go for now. See you on Wednesday!

A New Addition

Hey all, long time no chat. Camp opened yesterday so we'll have something to talk about soon. In the mean time I'm thrilled to announce the arrival of the latest addition to the Sec404 family.

Baby J.J. Jordan James was born on July 8th this summer and will be attending
his first hockey game at some point this season with his daddy Heath..sooo
excited, see yall soon..

Schedule's Out

I was a the dentist last night for my regular check up. When I was done I made my next appointment for January 21. As soon as I did it I figured that would without a doubt turn out to be Graves night for sure. Much to my amazement, the Rangers have an off night on Jan 21. Now it's just that two weeks I'll be gone in February to worry about. Want to start taking bets that Graves night will fall some night between Feb 13 and 29?

Can anyone tell me why, oh why, the Rangers are courting Mats Sundin? Today's Post. Do they need another center? A 37 year old center? Really? Reminds me of the old days when the Rangers were most famous for overpaying over the hill players. JUST SAY NO! They could get Avery plus a defenseman for the money Sundin is going to cost.

And speaking of, I'm really aggravated and puzzled by this one. Sather had decided NOT to resign Avery. OK, we know the guy's an asshole. But he's our asshole. Just look at the with Avery v without stats. Without him the Rangers have very little team toughness. (I'm taking a wait and see approach on the kid they signed from Sweden.) He forces the opposition to play a different game when he's on the ice. Ask Marty! Did he sleep with Sather's daughter? Is there something I'm missing?

NY Ice Bowl melting

I'm not a regular Newsday reader so I'm picking up on this a bit late. Newsday is reporting that the idea of the Rangers closing Yankee Stadium is quickly fading. Read all about it here.

I didn't realize they were talking about holding the game in November rather than on New Year's Day. After that snow swirling spectacle in Buffalo last year holding an outdoor hockey game in November seems anticlimactic. November = fall colors = Thanksgiving = football. January frost, freezing temps, ice, snow, now that's hockey.

It's too bad, I was all geared up to pile on my woolies and ring in the new year at the old stadium.

Observers say he's involved in all sections of the magazine, including features and accessories, and attends edit meetings. And while Avery pulled down $2 million last year with the Rangers, he's earning minimum wage for his time at Vogue, a magazine spokesman confirmed, denying speculation Avery was being paid $5,000 for his summer job.

So Disappointed

I really had high hopes this year. I thought our combination of players was the best we have had in years. Finally a team who would not be carried by one player as had been the case in the past seasons. The defense was questionable but the kids stepped up and added some depth. So, what happened? Where were these guys this series?

Aside from Jagr (who decided to show life in the playoffs after his most lackluster season) the veterans of this team disappeared and left the kids and Lundqvist to fend for themselves. They took way to many penalties and the powerplay was awful all year. Sickening…Trust me I know there are many other reasons. I can go on all day about Renney alone. But all of my bitching is not going to help the fact that the season is over and we are left once again unfulfilled.

I will miss Shanahan. I waited his whole career for him to play for the Rangers. He has always been one of my favorite players. Now I have to deal with the idea of him retiring…not happy about this.

An interview with Jagr yesterday revealed he is defiantly thinking about playing next year but I doubt it will be in NY.

And finally, the situation with Avery is completely insane. How in the world could the Rangers organization not give this guy what he wants????? He has been the best addition to this team we have seen in years. He is a “Ranger” in every sense of the word. He loves it here, he plays hard and we All love him. Every single fan who attends these games night after night loves this guy….Do Not spoil that for us….give him his money.

So, fellow 404 (and one 405) friends, I hope you all have a great summer. Maybe we can try to get together at Stout or something. We can drink and watch Detroit beat up on the Eastern conference winner.

There’s a lot of chatter out there about the league wanting the Penguins to win, about the refs being one sided because the league wants the Sidney to win. That’s crap. The high stick that left Drury bleeding all over the ice is not what caused the loss. The Rangers haven't played up to their potential all year. They have been taking too many penalties all season, and the power play has been crap all season. That pattern continued into the playoffs and when they came upon a team with talented special teams they couldn’t compete. I’m not going to say the officiating has been good, but I’m not going to blame the refs. That’s a cop out. The Rangers just weren’t good enough this season. That said, Malkin is a punk and I look forward to somebody, anybody kicking his ass in the near future.

They're not dead yet.

The crowd was quiet and unenthused when we arrived at the garden last night. Ready to talk about summer plans and see you next season. By the time the game was over we were making plans for pregame (at STOUT) on Monday.

Thanks go to the captain and the goalie, sounds familiar doesn't it? Henrik made up for his mediocre showing on Tuesday night but dazzling us with some brilliance last night. Jagr once again, picked the team up and brought us all along for a ride. I didn't expect to see Drury on the ice at all last night, he really gutted one out and and played great. And, be still my heart, they scored on the powerplay. TWICE!

AVERY

I know you'll check the real news before coming here, but in case you missed this the Daily News is reporting that Avery was rushed to the hospital at 3am in cardiac arrest, unconscious and not breathing. Seriously. Story here.

The Toronto Sun has a pretty complete story here confirming the lacerated spleen with Avery's mom.

According to Avery's mother, the Rangers' agitator suffered the injury during the first period of Tuesday night's game at Madison Square Garden after colliding with a Penguins defenceman.
Avery, not realizing how badly he was hurt, played the rest of the game in a great deal of pain.
Meanwhile, doctors at St. Vincent's are hoping that the spleen will clot on its own. Mrs. Avery said doctors were relieved the spleen had not ruptured.

Not going so well

The three things that won the Rangers the first round series against the Devils are the three things that they stopped doing in the second round v the Penguins. (Not counting the anemic power play. That's been a nightmare all season.) They're not clearing the crease, they're not crashing the net and Avery is no longer a factor. Sidney seems to have taken that roll effectively getting into the heads of everyone in the building. Jagr was great last night but the stellar play of one man isn't going to be enough to come back from what's now a 3-0 deficit. Only two other teams in NHL history have done that. If the Rangers can manage that, they're going to the finals, no doubt in my mind. Unfortunately at the moment that is a very big IF.

I'll be sure to bring my camera on Thursday; I know how you all love to see your smiling faces on the tiny screen! See you then.

Round 2

So Pittsburgh it is. We knew the Rangers would have to go through the Penguins at some point. I was hoping it would be after the Penguins got a little more beat up but that's not to be. I guess you can say that the Rangers are in top shape at this point as well, with only Orr hurt. So this in as good as it gets for the 2007-2008 Rangers. Is that going to be enough to get past Sid and Co? We'll see, the defense is going to need to step it up, it's going to be a lot harder controlling Sid, Malkin and that other Staal down the middle that it was to stop the Devils. The good news is that the Pittsburgh defense isn't all that impressive either, and the Rangers have a clear win in goal. I think we've got a shot. See you all on Tuesday.

If the Caps win the Rangers get Montreal, if the Flyers win the Rangers get Pittsburgh. Call me crazy but I'd rather see the team just coming out of a seven game series than the well rested Penguins. The Pens are the team to beat in the east and I'd rather the Rangers face them after the Caps get through with them.

Way to much on my mind at the moment.....just so excited they are advancing to round 2.
They played hard and looked determined. They did not seem as nervous as I was in the third period, that is for sure.

Avery took a beating throughout the entire game with not one call...surprise, surprise. I think the officials have to just cut the crap at this point. We get it. You are not happy with him but that does not mean he should be allowed to be beat on nightly.

The "kids" all had a great series! Tonight Callahan was amazing against the boards and Dubinsky with another goal. I look forward to watching them evolve even more as the rounds go by.....

Ok, I have to admit I wondered what would happen during the hand shake. I knew Brodeur would be cold toward Avery but I did not expect him to turn away....what a whiney b**ch! Get over it! I nearly fell off my couch when Avery called him fatso in the post game interview.

Now I am getting all fired up again. So I will end my rant here. I look forward to seeing you guys next round!!!!!

Redemption!

Staal get the game winner two games in a row with much better results last night. It's been quite a ride for the rookies in their first shot at the playoffs. Dubinsky leads all rookies on the playoffs with 4 points (2G 2A). Callahan has more shots (13) than any other rookie and is second only to Jagr on the Rangers thanks to his relentless drive to the net. And that's how you beat Marty drive to the net and get in his face. On the flip side the D needs to do a better job of keeping Lundqvist's crease clear. That last Devil goal is still bugging me. Henrik lost his stick, and there was no one in blue near enough to help him out he had two white shirts in his crease. That can't happen if we want to be going to games in shorts in June.

We had a great time upstairs last night, there's nothing like the blue seats in the spring. There were a couple of faces notably absent, where the hell was Mikey?! Julian has mastered the art of swinging a rally towel. I joined the guys up on the rail for the third period to avoid the jackass sitting behind me's racist ranting (who let that guy in?). The move worked out for the better I had a great time hanging with Jerry and Al, just like old times, and Al 405 and the luck was changed. I may have to spend more time up there next round.

Who's making the trip out to Newark Friday night? I hear Jon's going? Anybody else? I'm thinking of hitting the viewing party at the Ziegfeld. Anybody want to join?

Apparently the entire rest of the continent didn't find Avery's inventive screening techniques as amusing as we did. It's officially unsportsmanlike conduct, which i can't really argue with, it was pretty much the definition of unsportsmanlike. What really surprises me is no one has thought of it before! Well, congratulation Mr. Avery on having a rule changed in your honor.

The playoffs make me crazy! Game 1 turned out great, but I was not so confident during the second period. I just hope they come out flying tonight......

organization invites fans to travel together in a show of solidarity on Friday.

Rangers fans holding tickets to Game 2 and planning to take the train to
New Jersey are invited to join Rangers and MSG staff members at The Garden lobby
entrance at 4:30 p.m.

The first 100 fans to arrive at The Garden
lobby entrance will receive free New Jersey Transit tickets to Newark, as well
as Rangers playoff towels and placards.

Once the group is assembled,
we will go into Penn Station and board a train to Newark as a group.

Dana, Mase, Julian, Jimmy and Tommy took the pictures below along to the Rangers "chalk talk" with Graves and Maloney last night. Graves was kind enough to autograph the pics for them. Seems that the Rangers had a win against Pittsburgh the night those pictures were taken so Graves was wearing the same lucky tie again last night. I'm glad for it! I hope we'll be seeing a lot of that tie of the next few weeks!

It sure felt like it last night. The crowd was rocking (to the offense of some). Lundqvist looked like a rock star. Gomez played like he had something to prove. And Backman, jeez! First you want to kill him, then you want to kiss him! You're killing me!

Ranger's Alumni Night

Ok, so on Tuesday night I went to Alumni night with Julian and my nephews, Tommy and Jimmy before the game. (Janine and Mase were not able to attend) Ron Duguay, Nick Fotiu, Ron Greschner and Adam Graves were in attendance. We had a blast!

We drank lots of beer and listened to some great Ranger stories and an assortment of stupid questions from fans. Don’t get me wrong; the questions are the most entertaining part. It is always fun to watch former players squirm as they are forced to answer questions about the current teams “issues”…It is really funny!

We managed to take some photos with the always awesome Adam Graves and Ron Duguay. As you can see, the “boys” are psyched.

Outdoor Hockey

It looks like the Rangers are going to be playing regular season games all over the place next year. Opening in Prague and now a Winter Classic at Old Yankee Stadium. I gotta say I NEVER thought we'd get an outdoor game here. When was the last time it got cold enough for the ponds to freeze around here? Will that game be part of our regular package or will be an add on?

I have always questioned his shoot out strategy, but this time I am truly baffled. Why not give Drury or maybe our “captain” a shot at the action before resulting to Roszival.

I know most of you will say Jagr does not want to participate in the shootouts and he never scores anyway, but last night he actually played a good game. He may have just surprised us.

I didn't catch the game last night, went to see the Foo Fighters at the Garden. They had the game on the TVs at the concession stands. When we arrived we saw a 3-0 score in the Rangers favor. Excellent. The last time I checked in it was 5-2 Rangers. OK. I had the radio on while getting ready for work this morning and heard 6-5 Montreal. What the hell happened!?

I don't know if you all saw this but there was a nice article about Lundqvist a couple of days ago in ESPN. MVP? may be too early to say but he has for sure been the big tough stay at home defenseman I was looking for in the off season.

I know it was only the second game of the season, but I cannot help asking the question, how long will Lundqvist be able to keep them in the game?

So far, he has been outstanding. He made some unbelievable saves against Ottawa. The score could have been a lot worse then 2-0…that is for sure. However, he cannot possibly make up for the lack of defense all season long without totally burning out.

We need to see a huge improvement in the defense department……SOON!

See, what they were waiting for was offensive defenseman, scoring sensation, Marek Malik to turn it on. No, he's not the official league leader in scoring this morning but he is tied for third (with like ten other guys).

How good is it to be Chris Drury this morning? Not only does he get to play for the team he grew up a fan of but he kicked ass in his first night and is clearly and instant fan favorite. How do you not like a guy who's been in your seat?

A couple of shake ups in SEC404 last night. Somehow Nick totally flaked and now finds himself sitting clear on the other side of the arena. Peca signed with Columbus. Apparently Sather went so far as to bring him down to the big city for a face to face last week but decided against making an offer. I'd assume the issue was the question we all had, his health. I was going to say we'll see for ourselves how he looks when the come to NY but after reviewing the schedule posted on the Rangers site and the schedule posted on the Blue Jackets site. It seems the two teams won't be meeting at all this season. How is that possible? Columbus is driving distance! Good thing we've got those eight Islander meeting to keep us riveted to our seats.

The team is trying to pay as little as possible after all, aren't they? I think the only weird part is that the comments made it to the papers. Hossa's back in the fold avoiding arbitration. Still need that big D. Who's going to be the first defense pairing? It's not looking real good at the moment.

I can report that the beach was lovely last week. It's nice to see dolphins frolicking off the Jersey shore on a regular basis.

Shannahan has signed on for another season, Lundqvist is in for one more. Avery and Hossa are still out there and there is still that HUGE hole on defense. I'd give Avery and Hossa to get a solid, strong, stay at home defenseman. In my eyes the defense, or lack of, was the biggest problem the Rangers had last season. You can argue that the kids are more experienced now, bigger strong, but they still need a leader back there.

Wow! What a weekend! As of this morning 2 of the top centers in the NHL will be wearing blue shirts next season. Drury and Gomez don't come cheap, Drury's in for 35.25 mil over 5 season, Gomez 51.5 over 5. Do you realize that Drury has been a champion at ever level since he as a kid? Little League World Series winner, hockey state champs in high school, nationals in college, Hobey Baker winner, Calder Trophy, Stanley Cup. And Gomez, he's won 2 cups over here Jersey side. Big talent, proven winners, both universally thought of as "good guys". I just hope there's enough cap room to keep Shanney in blue for one more season.

oh, and I found the broken off half of my key chain. Dana says she can fix it. I'd rather have a new one!

I keep a Google calendar to keep track of my stuff. I just deleted tomorrow nights game from the calendar. That sucked. I know you all don't have plans for tomorrow night either. I'd say lets all get together tomorrow night and cry in our beer but I don't think we really have anything to cry about. The Rangers played well. They got hot at the perfect time. The defense clicked for the first time all year. Herik stood on his head. The truth is the Rangers were hot, yesterday they went cold and the Sabres are the better team. They had a great run, more than I expected. It was fun while it lasted. Now it's officially summer. I hear the Yanks picked up a starting pitcher yesterday....

Wow…Great game! I am amazed at the level of play from the Rangers. As we all know, Buffalo is a fast team and our boys really kept up last night. Lundqvist has been awesome. He has been great all season but has really stepped it up in the playoffs.

They got a bit sloppy in the last 10 minutes, which lead to Briere’s goal…. Correction, which led to the puck almost crossing the line. :) They will need to work on that because Buffalo is not about to give up.

I'm real glad yesterday's game wasn't a 8pm start! What a way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Bad calls and stolen goals aside, it was great to see the Rangers come through the way they did. Honestly I was worried early on, they weren't winning the battles along the boards, they weren't winning faceoffs, they were getting manhandled at the blue line. But damn did they look fantastic in overtime or what?!

I'll post some pictures later tonight.

Oh, by the way, i did a little stat checking. Malik is a +6 so far in the playoffs. Rozsival is the only other Ranger defenseman with a similar rating. give the guy a break!

Only 3 of the last 10 President's Trophy winners have gone on to win the Cup. They looked very beatable last round against the Islanders. If the Rangers can continue to play the way they did last round, keep that intensity up, they can totally walk away with this round. It won't be another sweep that's for sure.
